The Bubble in Tennessee

Ever since we moved to this beautiful state, I have been a little confused about our weather.  It wasn't until about high school that I learned about the geographic nature of our state.  Living in Middle TN means that we were in a basin.  That's the reason why all of the counties around us would get inches of snow and it would pass over us.  As a student, that irritated me to no end because I wanted a day off of school too!

Well, when I moved to Sumner County, I was thrilled because I was going to be on the ridge now, instead of in the bowl.  This meant to me that I would get an ample amount of snow days ahead!

NOT THE CASE.

Last year we had all of ONE snow day, and there really wasn't even an inch or anything to build a Frosty.  Then, this year they were predicting a crazy winter to make up for last year.  Well, it is now February and this winter has been crazy, but not for the reasons I anticipated.  Let me just tell you about the last couple of weeks.  First of all, we had the first speculation that there would be a chance of snow, but if nothing else, we would have an ice storm like crazy.  I got all excited because our Director of Schools had told the principals that he was seeing snowflakes as dollar signs, and he would take advantage of any days we could use to save money.  So, I put off all of my schoolwork knowing I'd have the next day to complete it.  Night came.  Morning came.  School came.  Every other county around us was at least 2 hours late.  Sumner... nothing.

Next night, same story.  ICE STORM EVERYBODY.  Night came.  Morning came.  School came.  For THREE days, my anxiety for a snow day was at an all time high... to the point where on Wednesday I woke up angry.  Sorry to my kiddos.  Mrs. Gibbs is not excited to be here today.

Fast forward a week later.  ICE STORM IS COMING!  Yeah right.  I said, "Bump that.  See you tomorrow, folks."  Well, wouldn't ya know.  At 6:01 am, I got the long-awaited phone call.  Hooray extended weekend!  Goes to show ya that if you expect nothing, everything is a bonus!

The following Monday, we were looking at 70 degree weather.  Beautiful day.

Then Wednesday night happened.  At 3am, I awoke to wind shaking my house.  It's a little house, you see.  Not much protection.  I laid there for a little while until the wind was so strong that I felt something was seriously wrong.  "Should we check the news?" I asked my sleeping hubs.  "I mean, I can," he said enthusiastically.  I laid with my eyes closed waiting.  Silence.  Did he fall back asleep?

"Umm.... We should get in the bathroom."

WHAT?!?!?  Tornado activity.  Right on top of us.

As I frantically try to find pants (because, you know, if something were to happen and I'm exposed to the world, I want to have on pants), my husband goes into the living room and stands by the window.  I wonder what he is doing, and then I see the curtains blowing.  "I can stick my hand through the window," he says.  Oh great.  Water.  Flying into my home.

And then... Water.  Falling from the ceiling.

And then... Water.  Coming in through the air vent in our bedroom.

And then... Water.  Pooling on the floor by our back door.

And then... Power is out.

It is a darn good thing that Dr. Phillips cancelled school because it was a LONG night.  And I didn't have means to dry my hair, so I woulda looked rough for the firsties.  Didn't get power back until 5:30pm.

Well, don't you worry because on THURSDAY night we had snow.  Real snow.  The kind that is white and sticks to things.  Except roads apparently.  We had snow on the ground, but we went to school.

Failed ice storms.  Real ice storms. 70 degrees Spring day.  Tornado.  Snow.

Welcome to Tennessee.
